Sundaram Tagore Gallery
Goal:
To overhaul an abandoned taxi garage recreating the space as an art gallery devoted to the exchange of ideas between Western and non-Western cultures.
Process:
Located in a run down 19th century factory building, the space had beautiful heavy timber framing, which KATZ highlighted by revealing the structure and leaving old floor joists and utilities open to view. To create a dialogue of contrasts, KATZ refinished the floor in polished concrete, creating tensions between existing and new, industrial and organic, and textured and smooth. KATZ provided full project management services including landlord/tenant agreement negotiation, construction document production, consultant coordination, and administration services during construction.
Result:
KATZ Architecture was able to lay the groundwork and streamline the process for easy construction completion. Within fourteen weeks the space was gut renovated and outfitted with brand new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. The gallery opened to widespread praise for its unusual design and has since been recognized as an important center for cross-cultural discussion through visual art, poetry, literature, performance art, film and music.
Moral:
Whatever your age, if you got it show it off.
